Description: The Scripps Tutoring Program provides free tutoring for any Scripps student who is enrolled in any course within The Claremont Colleges. Tutoring is a peer-based one-on-one or small group service that begins the third week of the semester and ends on the last day of instruction. All tutoring services are based on tutor availability and requests are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Tutoring for the Spring 2021 semester will begin the third week of the semester, February 8th and end the last day of instruction, May 7th. All requests for tutors must be received no later than April 30 for the Spring 2021 semester.
For students looking for a tutor:

- Requests should be submitted as soon as possible to allow time to identify a tutor. Requests received after May 7th will not be filled unless a tutor for that subject has already been hired and has the capacity to do so. We cannot guarantee that every student will be matched with a tutor. Currently enrolled Scripps students may request a tutor for any course they are taking, with the exception of Core.
- The tutor coordinators will email students to inform them of their request status. After an interview and training, the tutor will be matched. Once matched, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the tutor to set up an initial meeting. While the tutoring program makes every effort to identify a qualified tutor for all requests, submitting a request does not guarantee a tutoring match.
For prospective tutors:

- The Scripps Tutoring Program is always looking for qualified and dedicated tutors and accepts applications on a rolling basis throughout the semester. Students from all campuses in the consortium are eligible to apply. Students must complete at least one full semester at The Claremont Colleges before applying. Work-study and non-work-study students are encouraged to apply. Tutors are expected to commit to the goals and expectations of the program.
- All applications must be accompanied by a Faculty Reference Form. A reference form should be submitted for each department in which the student is applying to tutor. For example, if a student is applying to tutor in chemistry and English, the student must have a reference from a faculty member in the chemistry department and a separate reference form from a faculty member in English. The only exception is for applicants who have been nominated by a faculty member.
- Completion of at least one semester at The Claremont Colleges
- Must be a full-time student in good academic standing
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 8.0 or higher (2.67 on a 4.0 scale)
- Must not be on academic probation
- Demonstrated proficiency in subject/classes to tutor; applicants should have strong grades in the courses they want to tutor
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
- Provide tutoring for approved subject(s) to tutee(s)
- Respond to all Scripps Tutoring Program correspondence within 24 hours
- Attend every scheduled tutorial session
- Attend mandatory new-tutor training and subject-specific training
- Participate in additional supplemental training options
- Time commitment: The time commitment for each tutor will vary. The average commitment is three to five hours each week. Most tutors have two to four students assigned to them.
- Tutors will receive $14 per hour (subject to change based on California minimum wage guidelines). Tutors are not permitted to charge or accept any additional compensation for their tutorials. Tutors have an excellent opportunity to gain teaching and leadership skills through this work experience while enhancing their professional profile.
